New inputs on Miller & Hillyer portrait artists of New York
Many years ago, in one of our weekend antique and art hunts, we found an interesting work of art. The portrait was from Don M. C. Rodriguez. Doctor and his initials are, "M.E" or "M.C". We believe he was a Diplomat in the year 1846 or around that time, in New York City but born or from Chile, as well as a being a strong "defendant of the natives, or native tribes of Chile." Something very uncommon in those days, and we are still researching and looking for information on this gentleman, so any help would be welcomed ......This portrait painted by Miller & Hillyer in 1848 in New York, USA.
For a long time we were seeking for information on these artists. We found some that was posted immediately in our site, but the search was hard and tough. No information was available… Until now, that we’ve managed to get through directly to the source: the New York Historical Society. Alice Gringlod, from the New York Historical Society Library was kind enough to forward us the information available on the matter to help us unveil the mystery behind this work of art and the artists who made it.
These books provide us with an interesting insight:
“Who was who in American Art -1564/1975-: 400 years of artists in America”, Vol 2, Madison, CT: Sound View Press, 1999,
George C. Groce and Davide H Wallace: “The New York Historical Society’s Dictionary of Artists in America 1564-1860”, New Haven, Yale University press, London University press, 1957.
Miller & Hillyer firm consisted in two partners William H. Miller and William Hillyer, and after 1859 Stephen Krauss joins them for a sole year, for after 1860, the firm will once again be Miller & Hillyer. 1962 would be a turning point, for the introduction of portrait photography will make them give up miniature painting for the more technological option.
