Steam Tractor to Steam Engines in Argentina, Chile or Uruguay
Selling Antique Tractors, Steam Engines.......... and Argentina’s main economic resources has always been in the field: grains, cows, sheeps have been an incredible input to our economy throughout history. In the fields, the plow was one of the biggest and most important inventions. First powered by men, it was latter men was the one who guided the ox –the hard work now rested on their back-, and even closer to our days, horses replaced oxes in those hard choirs. It would take over 50 years for men to come up with a replacement for horses: tractors. There had been several unsuccessful attempts to use locomotives as a mechanical traction for the plow, firstly with the Fowler system, used for a while in the area of Bell Ville in 1868 and then during the early years of the 20th century there were some plows with “direct traction”. The result of those experiments was a much more expensive traction system than the original horse strength. However these attempts were the foundation for a revolutionary invention: Tractors. By mid 1892, in the USA an alternative to the horse plow system was successful. Tractors were born. In Argentina the first registered tractor importation was in 1906. It’s hard to know about quantities, for at first these items were registered under locomotives in customs. Later on they are registered as “motors”, therefore we can’t calculate for sure the amount of tractors that were imported in those days. It is only by mid 1920s that we have statistics on this matter. The information in those documents show that these machines were specially incorporated in big fields, for it wasn’t profitable in small fields. < So if you are interested in Art or Antiques, and you are thinking of travelling to Argentina Chile or Uruguay please feel free to email me…….. For as long as Argentina is Argentina, this country has had a strong bond in economic terms with England and the Great Britain Empire. First were the basic manufactured products, then came the bigger machines used to make other machines or better, function as means of transport. The great majority of Argentina’s rail system was made in the UK, and brought to our country in exchange for basic raw materials. Not only were the Argentine trains made in England and Scotland, but also our rail system was planned and executed by a troop of British engineers. As time went by and our country developed, trains began to live together with other means of transport such as cars and airplanes. All in all, these original early 20th century and 19th century rail vehicles did not fade away from the local scene. They kept on rolling in and around our enormous country, connecting people and far away locations. That was the case of one of North British Locomotive Company assets, christened in our country as the Expreso Oriente (as an homage to the famous Orient Express). Made in 1917 in Glasgow Soctland, there were only 50 units made of this model, and no more than 29 exported to Argentina. Most of them were bought by the Argentine Company Central Argentine Railway (FCCA), running usually in the Southern line. After it stop running commercially in the early 70s, the Expreso Oriente Locomotive plus two wagons were bought by a wealthy argentine family and placed in the famous Quinta Silvia in the outskirts of the northern posh suburbs. The train sat there for the past few decades, where it was used as a non traditional party salon, usually featuring weddings, anniversaries, parties of all kinds with an edge. However, this past August 26th, the Expreso Oriente locomotive and wagons were auctioned in what came out to be an outstanding auction day. The Silvia family who was the owner of the train had had a custom made original train station and ticket booth for their treasure. There was a waiting lounge, tickets office, bathrooms and a couple of extra rooms all made and decorated with original train station assets bought from other train companies such as the Central Argentine or The southern Train company. The auction locomotive was labeled number 570, 0-6-2 (1917) having been first owned by the Central Argentine Railway Company, plus two extra wooden chariot wagons. One of which was a dinning cart and the other a sleeping wagon, this last one was brought to our country by Southern Railway Company. The auction was organized in different lots featuring everything ranking from china and decor items to the very own locomotive, wagons and train station. The base price was 130,000 US Dollars plus tax. All of the major train item collectors and prominent business men in the community were there. At 2:30 PM the auction came to a bottom price reaching the 153,000 US Dollar maximum fro which it was sold to a buyer that chose to remain anonymous. The moving and relocation of the newly bought train will take place in the upcoming months, and in that occasion we’ll be sharing new and interesting details on this wonderful piece of collection.
