The magic of route 40 Argentina
This Classified Ad is for one "personal private driver tour guide with travel advice and + vehicle and equipment + meals on the road” and for you to have the right to reserve your seat on this overland travel adventure trip, for one unique tour starting around the first days of December of 2007, this travel adventure, that I’m organizing, a unique travel adventure trip down here in South America for only 3 other travellers apart form my self, the idea is starting out here in Buenos Aires, a cosmopolitan city full of live and exotic sights, we will be visiting unique buildings, lighthouses both in the city and on the Island of Martin Garcia some 40 miles by River …. As well as a day crossing to Colonia in neighbourhood country Uruguay, visiting the old Portuguese town of Colonia, some 300 years old …… After a day or 2 here and around these places we will carry on travelling towards Chile, going via Rosario, Cordoba and then Mendoza, seeing the Pampas, the Andes Mountains visiting Wine Bodegas, wonderful unique sights, searching town by town for Arts and Antiques, for those especially interested in old tractors steam engines we will also be hunting them, likewise for those insulators collectors, and visiting Museum and Art Galleries on all mayor stops, this adventure is not only about “hitting the road, jack” but also looking out to a parts of the world, that are rapidly changing and it might be one of the last times do see and document it before “man and the weather” change it for ever…. See sights and sounds like maybe have been the same for hundreds of years, remote villages, high up in the mountains or across in Chile. So we will be also crossing over to Santiago de Chile, the Pacific Ocean, Valparaiso, and then down south to the Big Island of Chiloe, this mystical and magic island, with hundreds of churches and strange wooded buildings over the sea, lighthouses and many islands to visit, and then back crossing over gain the Andes mountains, back across to Argentina, Via Esquel, Route 40, Ruta 40, seeing and travelling on trains, crossing lakes and bays, on paved and unpaved roads, hunting antique tractors, visiting lighthouses and museum, buying art and antiques and sleeping in small towns and villages some times in top notch boutique hotels other time in down and out places… Bariloche and Puerto Blest, for those by now tired out can catch a flight back to Buenos Aires, then home, or for those willing to spend Christmas and New Year in this part of wild South American and in style can carry on with me …….. Eating and tasting local foods and drinks, as well as wines … the idea is to have a total adventure in places I have already travelled to and others that I’m not familiar with. All this, for an adventure, that could well turn out to be ……… a drive of a life time. We would be travelling in a 4 wheel drive vehicle, 4WD this is a good on and off road vehicle, with all the equipment necessary also for camping out a night or 2 on the road, when its nice to ….. so far the idea is still being worked on, so its subject to some change, all I wanted to check out with this auction is if there are any possible candidates who would be willing to accompany me…… at the same time we would be documenting the trip for deferent purposes… I have worked out some kind of cost for the trip, its based on a daily rate per person, this doesn’t include any extra expenses but only the use of the vehicle and me driving it (included all running costs of the vehicle, me, there the 24 hours helping, couching and providing information on the sights we will see ) and insurance, it would be US $190 per person per day of adventure, minimum days 21, calculated on a base of 3 passengers and if all seats are occupied and sold here at auction, today or in future run up auctions. Great trip for a family of 3, friends, or adventurers who never got the chance to be one…… and why not just for those lovers of art and antiques who want to experience pure fun a dn the sport of hunting down items, village by village town by town ….. All other expenses; from trip down, to Buenos Aires and back home, from food lodging here and on the road and all personal expenses all the way to medical costs if any, all , and each expense for each person, are apart, are to be paid by each of the individuals doing the trip, and you can do this threw your local travel agent or any way you feel fit in doing it. There are some risks involved so its best only to do trip if you are in good health and to let me know of anything before hand. Some information on myself, Lonely Planet has me listed as a “friendly and bohemian art dealer guide” on page 49 of its latest edition of Lonely Planet Guide for the city of Buenos Aires. 60th anniversary of the iconic 2CV
Topic: Route 40 Tour

Citroen 2CV: France's iconic car

One of France's most iconic cars, the Citroen 2CV, is celebrating its 60th birthday this October

....... It was 1958 when Societe Anonyme André Citroën opens its Argentine plant, and though the French firm had already developed several auto models, it was the Citroen 2CV the chosen one. Featured as a B Segment passenger car, the Argentine 2CV had 190-700 cm3 motorizations. Given the high unsatisfied demand within the Argentine market, Citroen had to strengthen its supplies to the point they worked with Pfaff-Bromberg who was already in the country producing. In their Brandsen plant they began to produce in 1960 the first Argentine Citroen 2C and Citroen Van. The production progression was to start in 1962 with 10,000 units to double the number by 1964 in order to be able to export the 2CV model to Paraguay. By 1965, Citroen Argentina was producing over 6,300 2CV AZL models and 1,400 AZU Vans, exporting also to Uruguay and Spain. During the 60s there are constant works to improve the engine and transmission system, and by 1969 Citroen launches the 3CV model. Improvements and new developments within the style and comfort will continue in 1970, featuring the Ami 8 as well as the young vehicle Mehari. A critical economy situation forced Citroen to retire from the productive activity in Argentina. Eduardo Sal Lari, president of Daher Boge Inc would become the local representative for Citroen and will continue to produce some of its models under the brand name IES. Citroen will return to Argentina during the 90s with the PSA Peugeot Group.

Citroen 2CV Argentina
Citroen 2CV Citroen 2CV the ugly duckling turned into Swan Head officers of Citroen France had come up with the inexpensive cool vehicle back in 1936, but they had to wait until the end of Second World War to present it in society. The main theme behind this small car was to create a low cost comfortable vehicle for multi purpose use. The men involved in the design of this everlasting car were told basic directions, but not regular traditional ones such as space, design, etc. For example, one of Citroen executives said, I'm a tall man, and I should be able to sit comfortably in the drivers' seat with his hat on. So if when trying the prototype his hat fell, then the prototype was destroyed. One other demand was that anyone should be able to transport 2 dozens of eggs in the back seat without any of these being damaged or broken. By 1939 there were 250 2CV Prototypes made in Levallois that were never to see the light since the war was declared by France and England and those were destroyed to avoid industrial espionage. Only 4 of the total were saved from the destruction hidden in a barn in the French countryside. Once the war was over in 1948, the 2CV was presented at the Paris Automobile Show on October 6th. Most of the press who witnessed the presentation had nothing but negative comments. However Revue Automovile Suisse, foresaw the promissory future. On the other hand, the public received the 2CV open hearted proven by the endless waiting lists to get the economic and comfortable small vehicle. The early 2CV model was christened 2CV type A featuring a two opposed cylinder engine, air cooled, with a 375 cc piston displacement developing a 9cv SAE power at 3500 rpm. Running up to 65 km/h and consuming from 4 to 5 gas liters at 100 km. Available only in metallic gray, this model was a huge success in France and around the world. No more than a decade after Citroen 2CV made its first public appearance, this model was being produced around the globe in faraway locations such as Belgium, Cambodia, Chile and Argentina. Citroen 2CV Argentina
The insight on a Citroen 2CV passionate collector

Ruben lives in the Western province of Mendoza at the bottom of the Andes Mountains; just 20 km away from Mendoza Capital city. He lives in a small town that looks pretty much like the French countryside. Ruben is a family man who has a strong and interesting passion, his Citroen 2CV. We know for a fact that Citroen and more precisely its 2CV models were milestones in Argentina's auto history, in projection with the role these vehicles have played around the world. Ruben's story is just one of the many passionate stories we have found regarding the strong impact 2CV's have had on Argentines. We chatted with him this morning to know a bit more about his personal story with 2CVs, what they mean to him and a bit more. Ruben bought his 2CV 10 years ago in Mendoza. He bought it from a man who had it for over 20 years and kept the vehicle in superb conditions. His Citroen 2cv was made back in 1964 in Argentina. It has a 14 hp, 425 cc engine with centrifugal engage clutch, Michelin pneumatics, original tapestry, users' manual, radiator tent as well as the original fabric roof top in blue. The model was known as the 2CV de luxe due to some sophisticated details such as the third window, chromed hubs and bumpers as well as side and front moldings. He also has some of what we call the collectors treats: original purchase invoice from 1964. Ruben tells us he has always been passionate about the brand, that he has had 2CVs since he had the possibility of earning his own money. When we asked what the single most important thing was, he pointed out that the first thing that caught his eye was Citroen's history, the way it evolved since the 30s onwards. He recovers the anecdotes we reproduced in our article, since it was amazing the way the vehicle was first received as an unappealing car for the countryside and then it became a world trademark. Ruben is the first one in his family to have a Citroen, but he's sure he won't be the last one, especially because he has passed on his passion for 2CV's to his youngest son, Facundo. When Citroen returned to Argentina during the 90s they opened an agency in Mendoza, and for the opening days Ruben contacted them directly offering them his own original 2CV to showcase on the opening day. However, the company representatives told him that they were trying to detach from the 2CV image, working on a transition into slimmer lines and modern vehicles. Ruben was overwhelmed and upset. He inquires why on earth a firm that has developed such a trademark vehicle would disregard its history! He does not share the new winds blowing under Citroen wings'. While there are frequent Citroen rallies, the only one he participated of was the 2004 Mendoza Citroen Reunion. Citroen fans from around the globe came to Argentina, mainly from the South American region, because the shipping costs to transfer back and forth a vehicle are indeed high. However he recalls upon a German collector who had a 2 engine Sahara model, who traveled half around the planet to take part of the show. Our conversation went on and on, talking about the ins and outs of 2CVs and their history in Argentina. And at one point of the conversation, he tells us that he had written an ode, a poem to his own vehicle. Ruben was kind enough to share it with us, and we transcript it as follows. the Ode is in Spanish, and we have put our best effort to translate it without loosing its intrinsic music. Por la francesa llanura Through the French countryside Se ve la corva figura We see its curveted figure de un 2CV avanzar It's that of the 2CV Su rumoroso motor With its roaming motor 2 cilindros bien opuestos 2 cylinders facing eachother Una lona como techo Fabric roof y doble piso el baúl and a double floor on the trunck Levanto mi vista, y veo I lift my eyes and see En un cielo muy azul A very blue sky Su exquisita y rica historia As I recall its Que viene a mi memoria exquisite and rich history y se las paso a contar Which I decide to share now Se gestó a fines del 30 It was conceived during the 30s Vio la luz en los 40 Created during the 40s Se expandió en los 50 It expanded during the 50s Fue hippie en los 60 Turned hippie in the 60s Intelectual en los 70 Intellectual during the 70s Ciudadano del mundo en los 80 World's citizen by the 80s Y cuando dejó de salir en los 90 al principio, And when it was off production, during the early 90s, Su fama ya era un mito Its world fame turned it into a myth por toda la humanidad for all humanity A la que supo entregar To which it provided con su techito entreabierto With its briefly opened roof aunque sea por un momento even only for a little while el viento de la libertad the winds of freedom Por la francesa llanura Through the French countryside Se ve la corva figura We see its curveted figure de un 2cv avanzar It's that of the 2CV As soon as he finishes his recital, he says: "As I said the words, I feel I'm a crazy lover of the Modern creations, just like Cervantes did with cavalry". No extra words are needed to portray this man's affection and passion for his own car, its history and historical cultural meaning. A passion that finds its way through poetry to reach other collector's hearts. For more information: Email: admin@frassinetti.com Bob Frassinetti. Andes Mountains crossing over to Santiago de Chile and then south to the Big Island of Chiloe, back across to Argentina, Via Esquel, Route 40, Ruta 40, seeing and travelling on trains, crossing lakes and bays, on paved and unpaved roads, hunting antique tractors, visiting lighthouses and museum, buying art and antiques and sleeping in small towns and villages some times in top notch boutique hotels other time in down and out places Eating and tasting local foods and drinks, as well as wines the idea is to have a total adventure in places I have already travelled to and others that Im not familiar with. Our passion for Route 40 in Argentina is well known for our readers and net surfers. We began to work upon this project several years ago, and thought we were the only ones who were taking seriously the matter, the fact that the route is not only a natural and historical treasure but also a cultural one.
Along the road, both driving thru it and writing about it, we’ve met a lot of other route passionate riders ... One of them is Martin Jacovella. A young bright man who sharing this deep passion for the route has begun to work on a broad project to recuperate the route, its history and arts. Ruta40.net

Yesterday we met him at his mother's art gallery, Dharma Fine Arts, en el Paseo Arroyo (Arroyo y Suipacha), and talked for a while, working on ideas, projects and possible works together. It was a great meeting for, for once we had the chance of chatting with someone who shares our passion, but at the same time, we were very glad to find that more people is taking upon the challenge of the Highway Route 40!

Wines & Highway 40 in the high mountains of North West Argentina.

Highway 40 Tour & the Finca Colome: luxury, great wines and fabulous art

Around the world, the Argentine wines are being recognized, tried and enjoyed more by the minute. This "new" discovery for the wine lovers around the globe dates in our country of over two centuries; but it wasn't till recent years that Argentina's wines began to play a central role in the Wine world of abroad. Mainly known by its outstanding Mendoza vineyards and wineries, its fine Malbec, the world of Argentine wine is far broader than the Cuyo Region. Towards the northern frontier, as the green valleys began to turn red and sandy, the humidity turns into a dryer and hotter weather, there's another winemaking region of outstanding quality that hasn't yet
been truly appreciated to it's highest extend by wine lovers from around the globe. The province of Salta, and more specifically the area around the town Cafayate, is the heart of this new unexplored fabulous wine.

High Altitude Grapes & Vine Yards only found in Argentina.

Pioneers in the area were southern Spanish and Italian descendants who brought to our nation their winemaking techniques and found a very similar weather-geography-geology in this region. The area wines are stronger, featuring fuller bodies, mainly due to the climate and soil. Something not every winemaker is capable of appreciating and promoting to a sophisticated extent. Those with the sharp eye, the adventurous heart and the sensible palate to create superlative wines out of those grapes have the key to a wonderful world of senses, emotions and an unexplored market.

Donald Hess, of the Hess Collection, the Swiss magnate, owner of some of the world's finest vineyards -among many other successful projects- has recently discovered the majesty of the Calchaqui Valleys' wines, geography and special sweetness in the air. He decided this was the place for his next venture. It will soon become not only a venture but a life meaning path.

But Hess does nothing less than spectacular, none of his projects or visions is the sure thing, the trail everybody is going thru. So he picked upon the growing interest in Argentine wines, and developed a boutique top notch quality concept, miles away from the ever-growing Mendoza. Hess went directly for a Calchaqui Valley vineyard. But, yet again not just any vineyard. Colome is the oldest and highest vineyard in Argentina, and one of the highest placed ones in the whole world…………. Some 20 kilometres from Highway 40.

Highway 40 in the high mountains of North west Argentina.

Press here for photo gallery of the last Highway 40 Tour: Highway 40 from San Juan all the way up North West Argentina.

…….156 km north from the delighting and gorgeous town of Cachi, and 4 hours away from Salta capital city of the prvince of the same name, is Finca Colome, the oldest vineyard of our country. Following the shadow of Highway 40, traced by provincial route 53 leaving the small town of Molinos and heading 20 km more into the heart of the northern Puna is Colome.

Colome was back in the 19th century grapevines farm, featuring a main house-ranch, surrounding cultivating lands and a couple of houses for the workers. According to specialists the old Colome winery was founded in 1831, by the last Spanish governor of Salta, Nicolas Severo de Isasmendi y Echalar. In 1854, his daughter Ascension, married Jose Benjamin Davalos, and introduced pre-phylloxera Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon vines to Colome that were specially brought from France. Three vineyards dating from this time still produce grapes and stupendous wines thanks to the sharp eye and palate of Hess' sommelier. The winery and vineyards remained in the Davalos family until 2001, when Raul Davalos sells the Finca to Donald Hess.

The 96,371 acres at 2,300 meters over the sea level, facing the stupendous Cachi snowed peaks are the perfect complement to the superlative colonial central house. Designed and decorated in tune with the local Andes geography, highlighting the earthy colours. Each of the nine rooms is spectacular and extremely pleasant to be in. Visitants are pampered and every detail is taken care of wonderfully. From a superlative gaucho bar, a meditation area, fireplace living room areas, putting green and an outstanding pool, the Finca was successfully transformed from an old colonial building to a gorgeous boutique hotel that will soon feature its own Art Gallery hosing Hess' private collection of American and international artists.

Route 40 Patagonia and North of Argentina
Topic: Route 40 Tour
Just arrived back in B's A's after an exhausting long trip along the Route 40 that runs both South and North of Argentina along the Andes Mountains.

Some more information on Route 40 ……

It’s a difficult road to drive, goes from a good motor way all the way up to over 4000 meters in the mountains where the air is hard to breath, runs along river beds as dirt roads and in this season of summer some of the rivers are bursting with water and its near impossible to cross. All the same I was able to do it an 2 wheel drive car, without to much trouble, more to luck I think than other questions.

Its for the idea of off road rally car project I'm working on, so I checked out places hotels routes and sight seeing tourist like places for future use, I hope to be able to come up with a good plan for taking adventures tourist out on a 4WD trucks, and maybe why not a Estanciera.... or some other Kaiser built jeep Willy here in Argentina.

So if you would like to take part in any of my tours or in this interesting off road rally venture, for Route 40 Patagonia & North of Argentina please don?t hesitate to contact me directly thru email, phone ( 054 11 4792 4787 ) or chat using Yahoo, press here: Contact me See "artdealer_ar" profile on Yahoo, I'm online now!:You can chat with me using Yahoo Instant Messenger.

We had a fantastic time, sleeping in really some very nice hotels, comfortable ones, as well as one owned by the US actor Robert Duvall. He married a woman from Argentina. The House of Jasmines, Historical colonial estanciera-inn with seven rooms located on a 900-acre ranch bordering the Arenales River, just off Highway 51 in Salta, north Argentina.

The scenery goes without saying was supreme, from low flat lands to high mountains, dry weather, and strong sun shine; cool in the shade as well at night. Fantastic the scenery of the country side........ to incredible old mud houses used still by the natives of this continent.

So give me a day or 2 to get back into my computer mode and I will have time to chat some more……..

Here you can see some photos of the trip:

We work daily on the development of our projects, its part of our commitment as journalists and dealers as well as the way we carry on our daily work.

In the past months we visited with great pleasure the coasts of Uruguay –as we described in past work blog entries-, it was a trip for pleasure and one of work, for we had the opportunity of working first hand in several locations of our interest that have populated many of our most important projects of the past year. Such is the case of the Lighthouse documentary, the shipwrecks’ historical reconstruction, deep scuba diving and other more earthy like treasures like antique classic cars.

We are know working for and developing our first trip of the year 2006, this time to Route 40, Argentina, we will be visiting the North of Argentina, starting from the city of San Juan, Province of San Juan…… please feel free to check the update with new and fantastic information of our trip by checking this work blog we have started, so if you would like to take part in any of our tours or in this interesting rally venture, please don’t hesitate to contact us directly thru email, phone or chat.
